Lucknow, March 21 (IANS) Four festivals of different religious faiths Friday, passed off peacefully throughout in Uttar Pradesh, a top police official said here. Friday marked Chhoti Holi for Hindus, the Prophet’s birth anniversary for the Muslims, Navroz for the Iranis and Parsis, and Good Friday for the Christians.Intelligence reports had raised fears of violence in certain communally sensitive pockets of the state.
“We were really keeping our fingers crossed; but thankfully, the day passed off peacefully,” Additional Director General of Police (law and order) Brij Lal told IANS here Friday evening.
“We had made large-scale security deployments in all sensitive cities and towns and special patrol teams had been detailed to maintain round the clock vigil.”
“In view of the festival of colours - Holi - Saturday, the patrol teams will remain in place until tomorrow evening,” he added.
Lal said, “These teams will maintain day and night vigil; special squads have been created in most cities to keep a watch on revellers and directives have been issued not to allow mischief - mongers to get away with any kind nuisance.”
