Four dead in Assam petrol tanker explosion
May 31st, 2011 - 1:15 pm ICT by IANSGuwahati, May 31 (IANS) At least four people were burnt to death and 12 more critically injured late Monday when a tanker carrying petrol overturned and exploded on a highway in Assam, police said.
The accident took place near Bokakhat in eastern Assam, about 250 km from Guwahati.
“After the tanker skidded off the road, there was a massive fire with several houses along the highway ablaze and sleeping villagers were charred,” police official B. Bora said.
Four people were charred beyond recognition, while 12 people were admitted to hospital with third degree burn injuries.
“At least six houses were completely razed to the ground with the fire leaping ferociously. The casualty figures could go up as some more people could be trapped in the fire,” the official said.
