Nazar Hussain died Wednesday evening while being interrogated at the Nakhasa police station in Moradabad, some 350 km from Lucknow, in a theft case.
Hussain’s family alleged that he died after being beaten by police and he was not referred to any hospital even after his condition deteriorated.
“We have ordered the suspension of four people including a station house officer and a sub-inspector,” Superintendent of Police Piyush Srivastava told reporters in Moradabad.
“Depending on their role in the custodial death, stern action will be taken against them after the completion of the enquiry,” he added.
