Four Babbar Khalsa terrorists arrested (Lead)
March 26th, 2010 - 9:02 pm ICT by IANSPatiala/Shimla, March 26 (IANS) Four members of the banned terrorist outfit Babbar Khalsa International (BKI) have been arrested from Punjab and Himachal Pradesh, police said Friday.
Three terrorists were arrested Thursday from Rajpura town in Punjab’s Patiala district while one was held in Himachal Pradesh’s Solan district.
“The three terrorists have been identified as Kulwant Singh, Variyan Singh and Bhupinder Singh. We have recovered two pistols and live cartridges from them,” Patiala Deputy Superintendent of Police Manmohan Sharma told IANS.
“The three were working at the behest of an Italy-based man, Jassi, who had promised to give them money and provide them with houses if they eliminated a religious leader, Baba Piara Singh Bhaniarawala,” he said.
Solan Superintendent of Police Chander Shekhar Sharma said 27-year-old Mohinder Singh was arrested in connection with hand-grenades found from a village near the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) Stadium in Punjab’s Mohali town Tuesday.
“Mohinder Singh was arrested from Goyala village in Solan district Thursday. Police were on his lookout for the past three days,” Sharma added.
He said Punjab and Himachal Pradesh police arrested Mohinder Singh in a joint operation.
“The suspect was hiding in various gurdwaras (Sikh shrines) in Solan district for the past few days. He belonged to Churpur village in Nawanshahr district in Punjab,” he said.
Five hand-grenades made in Pakistan were recovered from Punjab village, a day ahead of an Indian Premier League (IPL) match.
According to police, the grenades were seized from Siswan village in Mohali on the basis of inputs they got during the interrogation of a member of the BKI, who was arrested last week.
This village is around 15 km from the PCA Stadium in Mohali, which was to host a match between Kings XI Punjab and Rajasthan Royals.
“On the basis of the interrogation of BKI terrorist Purshotam Singh alias Pamma, who was arrested last week, we conducted raids and recovered five hand-grenades from Siswan village. These grenades were made in Pakistan and have an imprint of P-86 mark on them,” Punjab Superintendent of Police (detective) Varinderpal Singh said.
A few days back, the Punjab police arrested two BKI terrorists from Zirakpur town, around 10 km from Chandigarh.
