Wellington, Oct 13 (IANS) Former New Zealand Cricket (NZC) chief Chris Doig has died at the age of 62 after a two-year battle with bowel cancer.
Doig was in charge of NZC for six years between between 1995 and 2001. Besides cricket, he was a board member with New Zealand Rugby Union, was involved in country’s rowing federation and was a popular opera singer. He breathed his last in Christchurch Thursday.
New Zealand rime minister John Key described Doig’s death as huge loss to country in the field of sports and arts. “Chris has had a remarkable career in the arts and in sport,” Key was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo. “His commitment to cricket and rugby, and to the city of Christchurch, has been truly breathtaking.”
NZC’s current chief executive Justin Vaughan said: “It was an honour and a privilege to have known Chris. He was a great servant of New Zealand Cricket and an insightful and astute administrator. He will be fondly remembered for his contributions not only to cricket but his service to other sports, the arts and the community.”
