Forest troopers kill tribal woman
December 3rd, 2011 - 1:06 am ICT by IANSAgartala, Dec 2 (IANS) A tribal woman was shot dead and another villager injured when forest guards opened fire to disperse a mob in Tripura late Friday evening, police here said.
“A team of forest guards arrested two villagers at Matrangibari in southern Tripura for collecting wood illegally. When the detainees were taken to forest vehicle, some villagers blockaded the road forcing the forest staff to open fire killing the 22-year-old old Sabida Reang on the spot,” a police spokesman told reporters late Friday night.
A middle-aged villager was injured in the firing and shifted to Gobinda Ballav Pant medical college and hospital here.
Tripura government has ordered a high level inquiry into the incident, which occurred 65 km south of here.
“A chief conservator of forest would probe the incident and would submit a report within three days,” Forest Minister Jitendra Chowdhury told IANS.
Tension ran high in the tribal dominated Matrangibari village and adjoining areas following the incident.
Additional police personnel led by senior officials have rushed to the areas to bring the situation under control.
