Fog hits air, rail traffic in cold Delhi (Lead)

New Delhi, Jan 19 (IANS) Delhi shivered Thursday as the temperature dipped to 4.8 degrees Celsius, two degrees below average, and chilly winds blew through the day. A dense morning fog hit rail and air traffic.

The maximum temperature in the city was 17.7 degrees Celsius, three degrees below average, an India Meteorological Department (IMD) official told IANS.

The skies cleared up during the day but the morning fog hit air and rail schedules. Commuters struggled their way through poor visibility early in the day.

Till 6.20 p.m., 82 trains were rescheduled or ran late by over an hour. Forty trains were cancelled, according to the website of northern railway.

Airport officials said 116 flights were delayed in the city - five due to bad weather in Delhi, 16 due to bad weather at destination airports and 95 because of other operational reasons.

The humidity levels wavered between a high of 97 and a low of 64 percent.

The IMD forecast similar weather Friday with dense fog in the morning and clear skies in the day.

“The maximum and minimum temperature will hover around 19 and 5 degrees Celsius,” added the official.
