Fletcher likely to attend Friday’s selection committee meeting
May 9th, 2011 - 1:14 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, May 9 (IANS) India’s newly appointed cricket coach Duncan Fletcher is likely to attend Friday’s selection committee meeting in Chennai to pick up the team for the tour to the West Indies.
A top official of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) told IANS that Fletcher will be arriving in Chennai Friday and will attend the meeting to pick the squads for three Tests, five ODIs and a Twenty20 international.
“But the BCCI is very cautious on Fletcher’s issue and want to keep him away from the media glare. Fletcher prefers to stay low-profile, specially in media. His attitude toward the media during his stint with the English team is well known,” the official said on the condition of anonymity.
Fletcher, however, will only take over as coach after the West Indies series due to prior commitments. Bowling coach Eric Simmons will be in charge of the team in the Caribbeans.
The meeting will be Fletcher’s first with BCCI officials since he attended April 27 working committee meeting in Mumbai.
Fletcher, a former England coach, replaced South African Gary Kirsten and has been given a two-year contract by the board.
The official also said that all the senior players are available for selection.
“Till now none of the senior players has approached us requesting to rest them for the series in the West Indies,” the official said.
India have been playing continuously since the World Cup. The Indian Premier League (IPL) started six days after India won the Cup and the West Indies series is starting six days after the Twenty20 league.
