Five youths held for rioting in Himachal

Shimla, Aug 30 (IANS) Five youths belonging to high-profile families of Punjab have been arrested for assaulting people under the influence of liquor in Himachal Pradesh’s Solan district, police said Tuesday.

Amongst those arrested is a brother of a legislator of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) party, while one is son of a former information commissioner of Punjab and a serving officer with the electricity department, police sources said.

“Five youths belonging to Chandigarh and Mohali were arrested for assaulting people in Dharampur town under the influence of alcohol Sunday night. Their medical report confirmed that they were drunk,” Solan Additional Superintendent of Police Ramesh Pathania told IANS over phone.

The accused, in the age group of 25-30 years, were presented before a Kasauli court Monday, which sent them to police remand till Thursday.

Cases have been filed against them under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code.

The youths have been identified as Harjeet Pal, Gurmail Singh, Gurpreet Singh, his name sake and Ravinder Kumar. A red-beacon luxury vehicle was also seized from the spot.

One of the youths has been accused of brandishing a pistol while assaulting locals.
