Five youths held for abducting teenaged girlMarch 10th, 2008 - 11:56 pm ICT by admin
New Delhi, March 10 (IANS) Five youngsters, including a woman, were arrested Monday for abducting a 14-year-old girl from outside her west Delhi home for a ransom of Rs.5 million. The kidnapped girl was rescued without harm later. Kritika Walia, a class eight student of the Happy Model School, was rescued from a house in Janakpuri in a police raid. The resident of the house, Jatin Sharma, 22, and a 17-year-old boy were arrested from there.
The arrest of the three other kidnappers - identified as Vipin Verma, 23, Suraj Bhatia, 20, and Shilpi Rathore, 19, who were found in a car early Monday morning in Mahipalpur - led to the raid on the Janakpuri house. Two cars, a Mitsubishi Lancer and a Ford Ikon, used in the crime, were recovered at their instance.
Kritika was abducted Saturday afternoon from outside her home in Virender Nagar.
Om Parkash Walia, the victim’s grandfather, in his police complaint said that around 3.30 p.m. Saturday he received a phone call from a girl who called herself Pooja who wanted to meet his granddaughter to borrow some class notes.
He allowed his granddaughter to go out and meet Pooja. But later Om Parkash received a phone call demanding Rs.5 million for Kritika’s safe release.
The police said Om Prakash’s mobile phone was put on surveillance and teams were dispatched to several places, but the abductors managed to escape their net.
Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (West Delhi) H.G.S. Dhaliwal said the teams, however, were able to lay a trap near the Mahipalpur traffic signal in southwest Delhi early Monday.
The police said a white car in which Verma, Bhatia and Rathore were travelling, was intercepted around 5 a.m.
Sensing police presence, Verma and Rathore got out of the car and ran, while Bhatia tried to flee with the car.
The police said the trio was chased and finally caught. They were interrogated on the spot and the house where the kidnapped girl was kept, was raided on their information. The other two abductors were arrested and the girl was rescued from the house.
“In their preliminary interrogation, the arrested persons revealed that Jatin knew the victim and her family for the past 12-15 years and that they had sold some property and had money. He informed Vipin Verma of this, who was in debt and needed money,” said a police official.
“They contacted others and conspired to abduct the girl. We are further interrogating to know if they had any other motive,” the official said, denying their involvement in any other criminal case.
