Five women drown as vehicle plunges into canal
September 3rd, 2011 - 4:39 pm ICT by IANSLucknow, Sep 3 (IANS) Five members of a family — all women — drowned while 10 others were injured when the vehicle carrying them plunged into a canal in Uttar Pradesh?s Muzaffarnagar district, police said Saturday.
The accident took place late Friday in Kandhla town, about 350 km from here, when the locally-made motor vehicle spun out of control.
?With the assistance of locals, we fished out the body of five women. The injured are being treated at a hospital, where the condition of four-five is said to be critical,” police inspector Ajay Singh said.
The victims — aged 25-40 years — were returning to their native Titetarwa village after attending a function on the outskirts of Muzaffarnagar when the accident took place.
