July 18th, 2011 - 11:10 pm ICT by IANSGonda (Uttar Pradesh), July 18 (IANS) Five schoolchildren, including two girls, were drowned in a pit filled with rain water in this Uttar Pradesh district Monday, police said.
The five, all aged below 10 years, drowned in the pit in Karnailganj village while they were returning from their school.
“It appears the students stepped into the pit while playing as they thought it was not deep enough to cause any harm,” police inspector R.P. Yadav told reporters in Gonda, some 150-km from Lucknow.
“The bodies of the children were fished out by the locals,” he added.
