Five regional theatre schools to be started

New Delhi, April 24 (IANS) The government plans to start five regional theatre schools in the country, the Lok Sabha was informed Thursday. The schools will be at Bangalore in Karnataka, Kolkata in West Bengal and Jammu and Kashmir. Besides, a school will be opened in Maharashtra or Goa, and yet another in the Northeast.

Minister for Tourism and Culture Ambika Soni said the decision was taken following the recommendations of the broad-based committee of the National School of Drama (NSD), which is currently the only institute where students from all over the country come to learn the finer details of theatre.

The opening of these regional centres has been proposed for the eleventh five year plan, she said.

In Bangalore, the existing NSD’s regional resource centre would be upgraded to make it a full-fledged centre, while the others would be started soon.

Soni said NSD had constituted a study group to frame the module and necessary guidelines for the setting up of these regional schools, including the regional training centre in the Northeast.
