Five pilgrims killed in Uttar Pradesh road accident
May 13th, 2011 - 6:19 pm ICT by IANSSitapur (Uttar Pradesh), May 13 (IANS) At least five pilgrims, including two women, were killed and 29 injured when a speeding truck Friday rammed into the tractor trolley carrying them, police here said.
The accident took place in Ataria town, near here, when the truck veered out of control and ploughed into the tractor trolley.
“While four pilgrims died on the spot, another succumbed in hospital. Of the 29 injured, the conditions of 10 is stated to be serious,” police Inspector P.L. Saroj told reporters in Sitapur, some 80 km from Lucknow.
The people, mostly hailing from villages on the outskirts of Sitapur and adjoining Lakhimpur district, were returning from the famous Naimisaranyam religious centre in Sitapur.
The driver of the truck is absconding, he added.
