Five killed as shell in metal scrap explodes (Lead)

Patiala (Punjab), April 27 (IANS) Five people, including a girl and two women, were killed and two others were injured in this Punjab town Monday evening, as a shell in a heap of scrap exploded, police said.
According to the police, a woman was trying to split open the old shell with a hammer at the shop of a scrap dealer in the Lakkar Mandi area of the town when it exploded, killing her and four others.

Police officials ruled out any terrorist angle in the explosion, based on preliminary findings. They added that further investigations were in progress.

Deepinder Singh, deputy commissioner of Patiala, who visited the accident spot, told IANS: “All the deceased and victims were labourers who indulged in one or the other activity in the area. The two injured were immediately rushed to the Rajindra Government Medical College and Hospital here.”

“It was just an accident and there is no possibility of involvement of any terrorist group in this episode,” said Singh.

Patiala is 70 km from Chandigarh.
