Five injured in police firing in Bihar
February 22nd, 2011 - 9:52 pm ICT by IANSPatna, Feb 22 (IANS) Five people, including two journalists, were injured in Bihar’s Kaimur district Tuesday when police opened fire to disperse a mob that was protesting against the killing of a local trader, police said.The angry mob torched a police car and a fire brigade vehicle. The situation is tense but under control, a police officer said.
A report also said that the mob also set ablaze a portion of the police station, but the authorities denied it.
Hundreds of angry people in Mohania town in Kaimur, about 150 km from here, were protesting against the killing of Sunil Jaiswal Monday night. They demanded the immediate arrest of the culprits and shouted slogans against the police for their failure to control increasing crime.
According to a district official, the protestors pelted stones at a police team, forcing the police to retaliate.
Additional Director General (Police Headquarters) Rajyavardhan Sharma said that officer in-charge of Mohania police station has been suspended for negligence.
Chief Minister Nitish Kumar met state police chief Neelmani and Home Secretary Amir Subhani Tuesday evening.
Senior police and district officials have been camping at Mohania and holding discussions with locals. Additional security forces have also been deployed in the town.
