Five held for selling fake gold bricks
February 15th, 2011 - 11:30 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Feb 15 (IANS) A gang that duped people by selling fake gold bricks was busted with the arrest of five people in south Delhi, police said Tuesday. The arrested have been identified as Islam, 32, Faruq, 24, Anjala, 22, Arshad and Ikbal, 25, all from Mewat in Haryana.
They were apprehended from south Delhi on a complaint filed by an Andhra Pradesh native Narsaiah.
“Narsaiah went to Sheikh Sarai Transport Authority for some personal work on Sunday. The five approached him and said they had stumbled upon ancient gold bricks while working in their fields, and tempted him to buy them,” a senior police officer said.
A deal was struck between them at the rate of Rs.10,000 per ten grams, half the prevailing market rate. Narsaiah gave them Rs.1,000 as advance and sought some time for arranging the rest of the money.
“However, Narsaiah grew suspicious and informed the police, after which the five were held with two fake gold bricks and a Santro car on Monday,” said the police officer.
During interrogation, they told the police that one of their associates, Tahid, procured fake gold bricks from a jeweller in Julehada in Rajasthan at the rate of Rs.5,000 per brick.
“Efforts are on to apprehend Tahid and the jeweller,” added the police officer.
