Moradabad (Uttar Pradesh), March 4 (IANS) Five policemen were booked Friday for the death of a 60-year-old man allegedly after being physically tortured by them in this Uttar Pradesh district, police said.

Mohammad Salim, a resident of Gal Shaheed town, died late Thursday when some policemen left him at his residence after keeping him in illegal detention in connection with a theft case.

Police picked up Salim Thursday morning to ascertain the whereabouts of his son, who has been charged with stealing a mobile phone.

Salim’s family members alleged that the policemen escaped within minutes after handing him to them. According to them, Salim was writhing in pain at that time and later died while being taken to hospital.

“The victim’s family has registered a complaint against five policemen. Of the five, a head constable has been named. He has been suspended while efforts are on to identify others,” Deputy Inspector General of police Ashok Kumar told reporters.

Meanwhile, agitated over Salim’s death, a mob earlier in the day staged demonstrations, demanding arrest of the accused policemen. They also vandalised a police station.
