First time all IBSA, BRIC countries in UN Security Council
October 13th, 2010 - 1:48 am ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Oct 13 (IANS) With India, South Africa and Germany winning three of the rotating non-permanent seats in the UN Security Council (UNSC), this is the first time the Security Council will witness the simultaneous presence of all BRIC and IBSA countries and three of the four G4 countries.
The BRIC countries comprise four emerging powers including Brazil, Russia, India and China who are set to becoming leading economies of the world by 2050. Russia and China are already permanent members of the UNSC.
Brazil was elected to a non-permanent seat last year and will remain there till end of 2011.
The IBSA comprises India, Brazil and South Africa, bringing three leading economies of three continents together.
The G4 comprising India, Brazil, Germany and Japan are aspiring for a permanent seat in the UNSC. India won the seat vacated by Japan from the Asia region in a vote in the UN General Assembly.
Bolstered by an overwhelming win in the election to non-permanent seat in UN Security Council, External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna said India will now press for expansion of the council in permanent categories and pointed out that this is the first time India will also continue to work with like-minded countries and groups for bringing about much needed structural reform to the UN Security Council.
