Kolkata, July 20 (IANS) A fire broke out in the 138-year-old New Market in the heart of the city Wednesday night, police said.
Five fire tenders were rushed to the spot to control the flames.
“A flower section inside the market has caught fire. We are trying to find the source of the fire and prevent it from spreading,” said a fire brigade official at 9.30 p.m.
Mayor Sovan Chatterjee is already at the spot.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is also slated to visit the scene of the fire.
The Gothic architecture market complex was built by the then rulers British in 1873 to cater to their needs. Till some time back, the New Market was the haunt of all fashionable Kolkatans
