Ranchi, Nov 27 (IANS) A first information report (FIR) was filed against two Jharkhand ministers for amassing wealth disproportionate to their known sources of income, officials of the vigilance department said Thursday. The FIR was lodged against Rural Development Minister Enos Ekka and Urban Development Minister Harinarayan Rai late Wednesday.

Acting on the directive of the vigilance court, the FIR was lodged in the vigilance police station of Ranchi after receiving consent from Jharkhand Chief Minister Shibu Soren.

Soren’s consent came after a meeting with the ministers, including the two against whom the FIR was lodged.

The charges against the two ministers includes swindling of government funds, amassing wealth through illegal means and other charges.

The court Monday directed the vigilance department to lodge the FIR while hearing a petition filed by Vinod Kumar, a resident of Deoghar district of Jharkhand.

Vinod Kumar had alleged that both ministers had amassed wealth more than their known sources of income since they became legislators and later ministers in 2005.

Ekka during the 2005 assembly elections had disclosed his assets to consist of Rs.50,000 cash, investment of Rs.700,000, one motorcycle, one tractor and some other assets.

At present Ekka is allegedly the owner of properties including land worth more than Rs.500 million. Rai allegedly owns property worth more than Rs.300 million.

Both ministers have refused to speak on the issue saying that it was a judicial matter.

The main opposition party in Jharkhand, the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) has demanded a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the matter.

“A CBI probe should be conducted against the ministers,” said BJP state president P.N. Singh.
