Bangalore, Sep 28 (IANS) South African batsman AB de Villiers will not take further part in the Champions League T20 as he fractured a finger on his left hand while training with the Royal Challengers Bangalore squad at the Chinnaswamy Stadium.

The injury to de Villiers comes two weeks before Australia’s tour of South Africa beginning Oct 13 with a T20 International.

De Villiers was named South Africa’s ODI captain after Graeme Smith stepped down in June. The home series against Australia will be his first assignment after taking over the side.

“He (de Villiers) will probably be coming back to South Africa tonight,” South Africa’s team manager Mohammad Moosajee was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo. “He will see our panel of hand specialists after that, and we will decide what the plan of action is.

“I understand from the Bangalore physio that he broke the third finger on his left hand during a fielding drill. It is quite serious, that is why he is coming back.”

Virat Kohli, De Villiers’ teammate in the Royal Challengers side, said it will be difficult to replace the South African.

“Not having AB is a big loss. But we have quality players in our squad who can cope with it,” said Kohli.

The Royal Challengers play Kolkata Knight Riders here Thursday after losing their first match against the Warriors.
