Few takers for IGNOU’s anti-human trafficking course
May 12th, 2011 - 10:03 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, May 12 (IANS) A year after it was launched, an anti-human trafficking certificate course started by the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) and the home ministry has few takers, an official said Thursday.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a national workshop to curb human trafficking, K. Elumalai, director of school of law at IGNOU, said:” The six-month certificate course which aims to accelerate the process of sensitisation against human trafficking as few takers. The course which was introduced in June 2010 (formally launched in December) has only 100 students across the country.”
He said that IGNOU had recommended to the home ministry to sensitise the state governments that such an anti-human trafficking course is available for law enforcement officials and other stake holders like prosecutors, government departments and NGOs.
“The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) through state government has asked the police department, narcotics, child and welfare department to enrol in this course, as it help learners to understand the various contours of human trafficking,” Elumalai added.
