Federations should be allowed to run academies in CWG stadiums: Malhotra
October 12th, 2011 - 8:15 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Oct 12 (IANS) Vijay Kumar Malhotra, acting president of the Indian Olympic Association, Wednesday said the government should allow the national sports federations to run academies at the stadiums constructed for the Commonwealth Games (CWG) so that promising sportspersons could be trained there.
Malhotra said it was all fine to come up with come-and-play scheme, but unless the national sports federations were allowed to use them for training their international athletes and holding major competitions, Indian sports cannot prosper.
Malhotra said the disciplines for which the stadiums were created should be used for setting up national academies by the federations.
“The federations should have a say in the utilisation of the facilities,” he said.
“There are a dozen stadiums owned by various government agencies like Sports Ministry, Delhi Government, DDA and New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) and these should be thrown open to federations running various Olympic disciplines for running academies,” Malhotra told reporters.
Malhotra pointed out that the federations are unable to hold any major event in Delhi because of lack of accommodation to house the competitors and the government should find a way to raise a sports hostel or some accommodation in the stadiums where it has land.
Malhotra, who is the leader of opposition in the Delhi state assembly, said he had taken it up with the Delhi Government and the DDA to plan accommodation for the sportspersons.
