London, Jan 22 (IANS) The family of an organ donor whose heart was removed against his wishes at a British hospital has been compensated 1,150 pounds ($1,700).

The family received the compensation after NHS Blood and Transplant — the authority responsible for the supply of donor organs in Britain — admitted making the error because of a fault with its computer records, the Daily Mail reported.

The unnamed patient had given consent for donating his corneas, kidneys and the pancreas after death. But, in a major blunder, the heart was removed instead.

The incident came to light after an investigation by an independent specialist group was set up to investigate government departments.

There are over 18 million people on the organ donor register in Britain.
