Factfile on J. Dey murder case

Mumbai, June 27 (IANS) The following is a factfile on the J. Dey murder case, which the Mumbai police said they had cracked Monday with the arrest of seven people.

Victim: Jyotirmoy Dey, Editor (Special Investigation), Mid Day tabloid of Mumbai.

Shot dead at close range June 11 afternoon, near his residence in Powai, north-east Mumbai, by assailants on motorcycles.

Motives: Unknown as yet.

The mastermind: Absconding mafia don Rajan Nikhalje alias Chhota Rajan, arch rival of another absconding mafia don Dawood Ibrahim Kaskar. Chhota Rajan is reportedly based somewhere in southeast Asia since the past few years.

The accused: Seven, all residents of Mumbai and its suburbs.

Anil Bhanudas Waghmode, 35, of Andheri; Rohit Thangappan Joseph alias Satish Kalia, 28, of Khar; Abhijeet Kashiram Shinde, 27, of Sion, (all three nabbed from Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu late Sunday); Mangesh Damodar Agawane, 25, of Jogeshwari; Arun Janardhan Dake, 27, of Chembur; Sachin Suresh Gaikwad, 35, of Chembur - (all three nabbed from Mumbai late Sunday); and Nilesh Narayan Shendge alias Bablu, 34, of Sion, (nabbed from Solapur late Sunday).

According to police, the assailants had no idea who their high-profile target was, but they got scared after a nationwide furore over the incident and dispersed around India to avoid police.

After their arrest late Sunday, the seven accused were Monday (June 27) brought before a Mumbai magistrate, who has remanded all of them in police custody till July 4.

Weapons used in the attack: A US-made 0.32 bore revolver, A Czech-made pistol with long and deadly cartridges (five were used to kill Dey).

Vehicles used in the attack: Three motorcycles and a Qualis SUV (as backup).

The contract: Reportedly worth Rs.500,000 (half a million rupees), according to police. It included an advance of Rs.200,000, with the rest after executing the job.

Police probe: Under severe pressures from the media and the establishment, Mumbai Police Crime Branch formed several teams and the department finally achieved success by cracking the case 17 days after Dey was killed.

Rewards: Home Minister R. R. Patil announced a Rs.1 million reward from the state government to the investigators who solved the Dey murder.
