Extra security for Ganesh procession in Hyderabad
September 7th, 2011 - 8:01 pm ICT by IANSHyderabad, Sep 7 (IANS) Additional security arrangements will be made for the Ganesh immersion processions Sunday in the wake of Wednesday’s bomb blast in Delhi, police said.
Hyderabad Police Commissioner A.K. Khan told reporters that the police force had already made all security arrangements for the massive processions and will mobilise additional forces.
He had earlier announced that over 25,000 policemen will be deployed to maintain peace during the idol immersions. Khan appealed to people to report to police if they find any unclaimed object or suspicious looking person.
He said policemen were deployed near Ganesh pandals (marquees) as part of the massive security arrangements for the 10-day festival.
According to police, over 40,000 Ganesh idols have been installed in Hyderabad this year. While organisers of some marquees have already started immersions of idols in Hussain Sagar lake here, the main procession will be taken out Sunday.
Over a million people are likely to participate in the annual procession, which brings the Andhra Pradesh capital to a standstill.
In the past, communal clashes have broken out during the procession, which passes through the communally sensitive old city areas.
Police are already on alert following communal riots that broke out during Ganesh procession in Adoni town in Kurnool district Monday. The indefinite curfew imposed in the town continued for the third day Wednesday.
