Tehran, Aug 5 (IANS) A major oil pipeline in southwestern Iran was shut down after an explosion Friday, a media report said. The cause of the blast was not immediately known.

The pipeline supplies about 4,000 barrels of oil daily from Qalehnar fields to the oil facilities in the southwestern city of Ahvaz, Xinhua reported quoting Mehr news agency.

Flames rising up to 40 metres high engulfed the site after the blast. The blaze was later put out. Crude oil supply through the pipeline has been shut down.

Officials have launched a probe.

Last week, another blast hit an Iranian pipeline that supplies oil to Turkey. Tehran blamed the Kurdish rebels for the blast.
