Explain strikes in Tamil Nadu judiciary, says apex courtFebruary 19th, 2009 - 4:10 pm ICT by IANS
New Delhi, Feb 19 (IANS) The Supreme Court Thursday issued notices to the Madras High Court and various advocate bodies of Tamil Nadu seeking an explanation for the on-going strikes on issues ranging from welfare of Tamils in Sri Lanka and changes in criminal laws in India.
A bench of Chief Justice K.G. Balakrishnan issued notices on a lawsuit by Indian Institute of Management (IIM) professor R. Murlidharan who questioned the advocates’ commitment to their profession, alleging that so far in 2009 advocates in the state have appeared in courts only for nine days.
The notices were issued a day after a mob of unruly lawyers threw rotten eggs at Janata Party president Subramanian Swamy for appearing in a Chennai court.
