Expect fair probe in cash-for-vote scam, says BJP

New Delhi, July 18 (IANS) Describing Sanjeev Saxena who was arrested in the cash-for-vote scam of 2008 as a “small fry”, the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Monday said the scam case would reach “almost to the top” of the UPA, and added that the party expected a fair probe after the Supreme Court order last week.
“We hope Delhi Police will probe the scam honestly after the order from Supreme Court,” BJP general secretary Ravi Shankar Prasad told reporters.
“The majority that the UPA government proved in 2008 (during the parliament trust vote) was by the misuse of money power. The action on this should have been taken three years back but it never happened,” he said.
Former Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh’s close aide Sanjeev Saxena was arrested Sunday, two days after the Supreme Court upbraided the police for the tardy investigations into the case. He was arrested on bribery charges in connection with the 2008 parliamentary trust vote, and later sent to three days’ police custody by a court Monday.
“Sanjeev Saxena is a small fry, the flames of this case will go much higher. This whole conspiracy will have very serious ramification and implications which reaches almost to the top,” Prasad said.
On July 22, 2008, three BJP MPs brought Rs.1 crore in cash into the Lok Sabha and alleged that the money was paid to them to secure their votes in the trust vote, after the Left parties withdrew support to the United Progressive Alliance-I government over the India-US civilian nuclear deal.
