Exhibition of Mother Teresa’s photos on in Delhi
August 27th, 2010 - 10:19 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Aug 27 (IANS) Her compassion-filled eyes, divine smile with hands folded in greeting, and a healing touch - photographs of Mother Teresa are on display at an arts gallery in the capital to mark her birth centenary.
Organised jointly by the Indian Bishops’ Conference, UNESCO and Mother Teresa’s own Missionaries of Charity order, the exhibition captures the heart warming journey of Teresa’s life in 40 black and white photographs as well as portraits.
The exhibition also features photographs by ace photographer Raghu Rai.
Rai had been photographing her since 1970 at the Charity in Kolkata, and capturing her daily life through his lens. The consulate of Albania has also brought out a coffee table book of photographs of Mother Teresa and her life, taken by Rai.
The Albanian-born nun, who dedicated her life to helping leprosy patients, the poor and the abandoned in Kolkata, had left home at the age of 18 to enter Loreto sisters in Dublin Ireland.
The Indian government has declared 2010-11 as the celebration year of the 100th birth anniversary of Mother Teresa.
A Nobel laureate, Teresa’s work has been recognised and acclaimed throughout the world.
The exhibition, inaugurated by Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit Aug 23, will continue till Aug 31 before travelling to Kolkata where it will be put on view Oct 9-30 at the Rabindra Nath Tagore Centre.
Armoogum Parsuramen, UNESCO director in India, expressed hope that the exhibition will communicate compassion, peace and mutual respect amongst young people.
The exhibition is at Visual Arts gallery of India Habitat Centre.
