‘Exempt plantation sector from minimum wages act’

Conoor (Tamil Nadu), Sep 9 (IANS) The government should exempt the plantation sector from the purview of the Minimum Wages Act, said a top industry official.Addressing the 115th Annual conference of United Planters Association of Southern India (Upasi) here Tuesday, its president D.P.Maheshwari said the centre has the power under Central Plantations Act to stipulate the working conditions and wages in the plantations.

However, the state government exercises the power under the Minimum Wages Act.

He said the central government should advise the states about the importance of the plantation sector in the country’s economy and the issues while fixing the wages.

He said the state government is not alive to the changes that has happened in the plantation sector.
