Ex-high court judge to screen goons for NSA detention in Goa
September 8th, 2011 - 3:53 pm ICT by IANSPanaji, Sep 8 (IANS) The Goa government has formed a committee headed by a former Bombay High Court judge to screen anti-social elements fit to be arrested under the National Security Act (NSA), Home Minister Ravi Naik said Thursday.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a Raj Bhavan ceremony, Naik said the step was taken after a daylight knifing in Panaji last week, in which five people, including a woman, received grievous injuries.
“The committee, headed by retired high court judge R.M.S. Khandeparkar, will have two other members,” Naik said.
“Police will recommend fit cases to the district collector, who, in turn, will refer these to this high-level committee,” Naik further said.
One local gangster, Salvador Fernandes alias Galu, died Tuesday after he was stabbed during a street fight the police described as gang war between two groups owing allegiance to regional political satraps.
“The chief secretary will issue a notification announcing the formation of the committee soon,” Naik said.
