Europe’s oldest man living in Belgium

Brussels, Oct 31 (IANS) Working hard and going to sleep at a decent hour are the secrets to a long life, according to Jan Goossenaerts of Belgium who turned 111-year-old Sunday, EuAsiaNews reported.

According to local media reports, he is Europe’s oldest man.

Born Oct 30 October, 1900, Goossenaerts hails from the town of Essen in northern Belgium. He worked on a farm and in the building sector and retired in 1965 at the age of 65.

Asked about his secret of living a long life, Goossenaerts said: “Working hard, going to sleep at a decent hour and putting Liege syrup on your bread.”

Liege is a town in south-east Belgium.

There are only 82 people over 110 years of age in the world comprising 77 women and five men.
