Ambala (Haryana), June 2 (IANS) Two teenagers, trying to evade a police check-post, lost their lives Thursday when they collided head-on with a car in this Haryana district. Five policemen were later suspended after the two youth’s family members protested violently, even setting a police vehicle afire.

According to police, the accident occurred on the Narayngarh-Panchkula road near Markanda river bridge.

The deceased were identified as Mohit Rana (19), a first-year under-graduate, and Neeraj Sharma (18), studying in Class 12. Both of them were residents of village Gadhoula near Narayangarh town here.

“Mohit and Neeraj were going towards Narayangarh on a bullet motorcycle when they were directed by police to stop near a check-post for regular checking. But they accelerated the bike and tried to flee. In all this melee, the bike collided with a Tata Sumo car that was coming from the opposite direction,” said a police officer here.

“Mohit died on the spot while Neeraj died while being taken to PGIMER (Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and research) in Chandigarh,” the officer added.

Agitated relatives of the deceased and other residents of Gadhoula village then blocked the Panchkula-Narayangarh road for over two hours, alleging that the five policemen, stationed at the check-post, tried to hit the youths without any provocation, leading to the incident.

They also set a police vehicle on fire.

The blockade was lifted only after Ambala police chief Shashank Anand reached the spot and assured them of full justice.

In the meantime, Gadhoula village people constituted a five-member committee to discuss this case with police and they demanded the suspension of the errant cops.

Succumbing to pressure, the five policemen - an assistant sub-inspector and four constables - have been suspended. Assistant Superintendent of Police Devinder Yadav has been asked to carry out an inquiry.
