Ensure safety of northeasterns, Delhi Police urged
November 17th, 2011 - 6:39 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Nov 17 (IANS) The North East Support Centre and Helpline (NESCH) Thursday urged Delhi Police to ensure safety of people from the northeastern region in Delhi and Gurgaon.
The group asked police to particularly help women who it said continued to be soft targets of racial attacks and sexual assault.
“Thousands of educated girls from Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Assam and Arunachal Pradesh (working) in call centres and the IT sector are facing racial discrimination and sexual assault,” NESCH spokesperson Madhu Chandra said in a letter to Delhi Police Commissioner B.K. Gupta.
The centre also suggested a special helpline for the northeast community headed by a deputy commissioner of police, preferably from the northeast, and night patrolling in areas where the northeast population was high.
