Engineer takes a lift, set on fire for not paying up

Panipat (Haryana), April 17 (IANS) Taking a lift on a truck Thursday cost a young engineer in Haryana his life after the truck crew set him on fire for not paying them for the ride. The youth, 24-yeasr-old Ajit of Salwan village in Assandh area of Panipat district, 100 km from Delhi, died of burn injuries at the Post Graduate Institute (PGI) hospital in Rohtak.

The youth had taken a lift from the truck crew neat Samalkha town, 25 km from here.

The police officials who investigating the case said it appeared that the truck crew picked up an argument with the youth as he got down from the vehicle over the payment for the ride.

“It is believed that they asked for Rs.100 and he was ready to pay only Rs.25. This led to an argument and they poured diesel on him and set him on fire,” a police official said.

People from a nearby village saw the youth burning and informed the police. He was rushed to a nearby hospital from where he was referred to the PGI, Rohtak for treatment.

He died a few hours later of over 65 percent burns.

District police officials here said they were trying to locate the truck and the men who killed the youth.
