Dharamsala, May 9 (IANS) The 17th Karmapa, a religious head of the exiled Tibetans settled in this Himachal Pradesh town, Monday asked the Chinese government to end a stand-off at the Kirti monastery in northeastern Tibet.

“I join His Holiness the Dalai Lama in his appeal to the central Chinese government and the international community to peacefully resolve the current crisis in Ngaba,” said a statement of the Karmapa Office of Administration, quoting the Karmapa, Ogyen Trinley Dorje.

It said the Karmapa also presided over a special prayer session last week, which was organised by 12 organisations based here.

The tense situation around the Kirti monastery arose when monk Phuntsok set himself afire March 16 to protest the repression of the widespread peaceful protests across Tibet in 2008.

The Dalai Lama has already expressed his deep concern and asked the international community to intervene to end the stand-off there.

The Karmapa is the spiritual head of the Karma Kagyu school, one of the four sects of Buddhism. He is considered the third most important Tibetan religious head after the Dalai Lama and the Panchen Lama.
