Elevated road for Games to be inaugurated Sep 15
August 30th, 2010 - 11:22 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Aug 30 (IANS) An elevated road built over the Barapullah drain to link the Commonwealth Games village in east Delhi to Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in south Delhi will be inaugurated Sep 15, an official said Monday.
Another Games project, the Ring Road bypass — linking Indira Gandhi Stadium to Kashmere Gate — will be thrown open to public Sep 11, the official said.
Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit held separate meetings on the two projects at the Delhi Secretariat Monday to discuss the progress.
Public Works Department Minister Raj Kumar Chauhan and contractors involved in the project were also present.
According to a government source, the final date for inauguration was decided in the meeting.
Both the projects have been undertaken by the Delhi government’s PWD.
The Ring Road bypass from Velodrome Road to Salimgarh Fort (behind Red Fort) is a part of the integrated traffic and transport plan prepared for the Games.
It will not only eliminate the traffic chaos on the Ring Road but also provide a more viable alternative route to commuters between Indira Gandhi Stadium and Kashmere Gate. The 5.5-km bypass is being built at a cost of Rs.654 crore.
The four-km-long elevated road, built at a cost of nearly Rs.550 crore, will be thrown open to the public after the Games.
The project for linking east Delhi with Nehru Stadium was first approved in 2006. The earlier plan was to build a tunnel between the Games village and the stadium but this was rejected.
In August 2008, the government decided to go ahead with the elevated road over the drain.
