Eight Pakistani soldiers get posthumous UN medals
May 30th, 2011 - 9:50 pm ICT by IANSIslamabad, May 30 (IANS) Eight Pakistani soldiers working with the UN Peacekeeping Force, who laid down their lives while on duty, have been awarded medals posthumously, a media report said here Monday.
The Dag Hammarskjold Medals were awarded to the families of the soldiers at a solemn ceremony at the UN headquarters in New York.
Raza Bashir Tarar, deputy permanent representative of Pakistan to the UN, received the medals on behalf of the families, the Online news agency reported.
The eight Pakistanis laid down their lives in Sudan, Liberia, and the Democratic Republic of Congo during March to December last year, said Pakistan’s Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) that looks after media matters related to defence.
Pakistan is one of the largest contributors to UN peacekeeping missions around the world with 10,500 troops, it said.
