Eight killed as jeep runs over Ramlila audience
October 28th, 2011 - 12:26 pm ICT by IANSLucknow, Oct 28 (IANS) At least eight people were killed and six injured after they were run over by a jeep while watching the Ramlila, a mythological Hindu play, in Uttar Pradesh’s Azamgarh district, police said Friday.
The accident took place Thursday night when the speeding jeep spun out of control and ran over the people watching the Ramlila at a roadside ground in Kaptanganj town, some 300 km from Lucknow.
“While five people died on the spot, three others succumbed to their injuries today (Friday) during treatment at a hospital,” police inspector Kamlesh Singh said.
“All the injured are being treated at a hospital where the condition of three is said to be extremely serious,” he added.
Police are yet to trace the jeep driver who escaped soon after the accident.
The victims are natives of Kaptanganj and adjoining villages.
