Earthquake jolts Nicobar Islands (Second Lead)
June 3rd, 2011 - 5:53 pm ICT by IANSChennai, June 3 (IANS) The Nicobar Islands were rocked by an earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale at 12.57 p.m. Friday, an India Meteorological Department official said. There were no reports of loss of life or property.
“It was of moderate intensity, and initially there are no reports of any damage or casualty,” the official said.
The chain of islands in the Bay of Bengal is earthquake prone.
Last year during the same period, an earthquake of 7.7 magnitude was reported in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
Speaking to IANS, an official of the Hyderabad-based Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) said there were no after-shocks.
