Drunk driver smashes car into tree in Delhi, one killed

New Delhi, Feb 6 (IANS) A 25-year-old man was killed and four of his friends suffered injuries Friday when one of them driving a car lost control over it and smashed into a tree near the Connaught Place area of the capital, the police said.Salim was killed and his friends Mohammed Wasim, Abid, Abdul Rahman and Wasim - all in their mid-20s and residents of Sadar Bazar - suffered injuries in the accident that took place in Gol Market area around 1.30 a.m.

The injured - all in an inebriated state - were admitted to the Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital where Salim succumbed to injuries two hours later. Rahman, who was driving, was recuperating at the hospital, while the other three have been discharged.

The police said the victims were speeding in their Opel Astra car that first climbed onto the road partition and then smashed into a tree before halting on Peshwa Road T-junction.

“We have registered a case of rash and negligent driving against the driver and will arrest him once he is discharged from the hospital,” said a police officer.

The accident came a day after when an employee of a radio channel was killed and three of his friends injured when the car they were riding in hit a tree on Vinay Marg.

The driver of that car also was drunk, the police said.
