Kolkata, Nov 6 (IANS) A doctor was suspended Sunday for being drunk while on duty at a state-run hospital here. A case has also been lodged against him by police.
The physician, Prabir Kumar Ghosh, who is attached to the Bagha Jatin Hospital in the city’s southern outkskirts, was found in an inebriated condition while treating patients in the emergency department.
Following a verbal complaint from an aggrieved patient, personnel from Jadavpur police station went to the hospital and brought the doctor to the M.R. Bangur Hospital for medical check-up. Later, an FIR was lodged against him.
Locals and relatives of patients also beat up the doctor, who admitted to the media that he was intoxicated. “I have taken intoxicants. This is not right. I took it to overcome my frustration at tremendous work load and to get relief from joint pain.”
“This is very unfortunate. This is a crime. He has been put under suspension. We are seized with the matter. He may even be arrested and a criminal case started against him,” said Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
Union Minister of State for Health Sudip Bandopadhyay said Ghosh should be given exemplary punishment.
Locals alleged the doctor used to come on duty in an inebriated state for years.
