Drug smuggler killed on India-Pakistan border (Lead)
March 9th, 2011 - 4:51 pm ICT by IANSJammu, March 9 (IANS) A narcotics smuggler suspected to be a Pakistani was shot dead by Indian border guards on the Jammu and Kashmir border after trying to sneak into India, an official said Wednesday.
Two smugglers chose a river to make an illegal entry into the border area of Ranbir Singh Pura in Jammu region Tuesday night when the Border Security Force (BSF) opened fire.
The smugglers tried to escape but one was killed in the firing, BSF sources told IANS. An AK magazine and five packets of drugs were recovered from the slain man.
“It seems that smugglers from Pakistan are now using rivers instead of land to avoid detection,” an official said.
India has a 198-km international border with Pakistan in Jammu region. This is separate from the Line of Control (LoC) that separates the Kashmir Valley and Pakistani-administered Kashmir.
