Drought-hit 14 mn Chinese lack drinking water
September 8th, 2011 - 8:12 pm ICT by IANSBeijing, Sep 8 (IANS) Over 14 million people in southwest China are short of drinking water due to a lingering drought, a media report said Thursday.
Over six million hectares of farmland were also affected, the drought relief headquarters said.
The provinces of Guizhou, Yunnan and Sichuan, and the Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region and Chongqing municipality were severely hit since early July, China Daily reported.
Water Resources Minister Chen Lei Thursday ordered the authorities to formulate plans to address the problem of inadequate drinking water.
The meteorological authorities have issued light and moderate rain forecasts for these drought-hit regions over the next three days.
