Also, the number of accidents in the city has recorded a drop of over 27 percent between Jan 1 to July 15, as compared to last year.
From 4,072 in 2009, the number of accidents has come down to 3,187 between Jan 1 and July 15 this year — a difference of 885 cases.
Police said 1,087 people have died this year between Jan 1 to July 15 in road accidents as compared to 1,236 during the same period in 2009.
Also, 153 less fatal accidents have been reported so far this year. About 1,051 fatal accidents were reported this year, compared to 1,204 in 2009.
The “chase and challan” (fine) initiative started by the Delhi Traffic Police is also bearing fruit. With more than 600 motorbikes patrolling the roads, the policemen are intercepting and fining the offenders efficiently, police said.
The number of people caught for jumping traffic signals has increased from 196,280 last year to 247,973 this year.
