‘Dreaded criminal’ dies in shootout with police
May 28th, 2009 - 10:27 pm ICT by IANSGhaziabad, May 28 (IANS) Police in Ghaziabad Thursday said they have gunned down a “dreaded criminal”, who allegedly killed four women three years ago and had escaped from a lockup.
Manoj Kumar, “wanted in over a dozen cases including robbery and murders”, was killed in a shootout with police at Pilakhuwa town in this Uttar Pradesh district, Superintendent of Police K.K. Asthana said.
Asthana said two motorcycle-borne men opened fire on police Thursday when they were asked to stop for routine checking.
“In the retaliatory fire, one of the men was injured and was declared dead at MMG hospital in Ghaziabad. He was later identified as Manoj Kumar, a dreaded criminal,” said K.K. Asthana.
Kumar’s accomplice managed to fled, police said.
Kumar was wanted in the murder of four women in Noorpur area of Ghaziabad in 2006, police said.
He escaped from judicial custody Aug 5, 2008 when he was in a lockup at district court.
This is the eighth police shootout this year where a total of nine suspected criminals have been killed.
