Dolphin population in Chilika declines
January 19th, 2012 - 1:26 am ICT by IANS ( Leave a comment )Bhubaneswar, Jan 18 (IANS) The population of endangered Irrawaddy dolphins in Odisha’s Chilika Lake has declined to 145 in 2012 from last year’s 156, officials said Wednesday.
The finding was based on the census of dolphin for the year carried out in the lake Jan 16-17. January.
“The slight reduction of estimated number could be due to the migration of the species from lake to the sea and vice-versa,” Chilika Development Authority (CDA) chief executive A.K.Pattnaik said in a statement.
The Chilika Lake, about 100 km from Bhubaneswar, is spread over Puri, Khordha and Ganjam districts of the state and is also home to the largest congregation of migratory birds in the country.
