Doctor’s death in jail: Family moves Supreme Court (Lead)
July 7th, 2011 - 11:55 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, July 7 (IANS) The Supreme Court will Friday hear a petition seeking a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the death of Lucknow deputy chief medical officer Y.S. Sachan, who was found dead in a jail toilet.
The plea was filed by the doctor’s family, which claimed that the Uttar Pradesh government was engaged in a cover-up and trying to projest the death as a case of suicide.
The apex court bench of Justice Altamas Kabir and Justice Cyriac Joseph asked counsel Kamini Jaiswal, appearing for Sachan’s family, to route the petition through the court registry. The court said this when she mentioned the matter before it Thursday.
Sachan, the prime accused in chief medical officer B.P. Singh’s murder, was June 22 found dead in mysterious circumstances in the washroom of Lucknow district jail hospital where he was under treatment.
He was found dead just a day before he was to be taken to court with other three accused - Ram Krishna Verma, Anand Tewari and Vinod Sharma.
His doctor brother R.K. Sachan, wife Malti Sachan and son moved the court, claiming that the Uttar Pradesh government was engaged in a cover-up in the case.
The petition said that the advocate general of the state was wrongly instructed to inform the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court that the post-mortem examination of Sachan was conducted in the presence of the victim’s brother and wife.
The petition said they both had to file an affidavit negating the claim by the advocate general, forcing the high court to observe that it was faced with a “piquant situation”.
The petition said how could a person commit suicide by hanging himself from his belt, as claimed by police. The ligature mark on Sachan’s neck raised the suspicion that it was not a matter of suicide.
Sachan was arrested for his alleged role in the murder of B.P. Singh in an attempt to put a lid on the scam involving financial irregularities and embezzlement of National Rural Health Mission funds.
B.P. Singh was shot dead by unidentified people April 2 morning, when he went for a walk.
Sachan’s name also figured in the murder of another chief medical officer, Vinod Kumar Arya, who too was shot dead in October last year when he went for a morning walk.
